Contract signing signals start of Tuam’s big dig
February 5, 2010 - 8:00amby Declan Tierney
The need for a slick traffic management plan for Tuam was highlighted in the aftermath of the contracts being signed for the €28 million dig of the town for water and sewerage facilities.
The digging up of the town will begin within the next six weeks and will cause major disruption and calls have been made to try and facilitate the traffic flow through Tuam.
Even before the dig begins, it can take three quarters of an hour to get through the town on a Friday afternoon with four mile tailbacks being experienced.
Once the dig starts, then the traffic delays are going to get more serious and a comprehensive traffic management plan for the next two years has been demanded.
Mayor of Tuam, Cllr. Tom Reilly is insisting that once the work commences, that a plan is put in place to ensure the flow of traffic is maintained through the town.
He said that he wants the three sets of traffic lights in Tuam to be switched off during peak hours and that they are manned by a member of the Gardai.
Mayor Reilly said that he would be meeting with the Garda Superintendent in Tuam, Marie Skehill, to discuss this situation with her. He feels that the existing lights are a major cause of the traffic backlogs in Tuam.
