FRAUD CHARGES AGAINST GORT EGG FARMER DROPPED

March 11, 2010 - 5:24pm

Multi-million pound fraud charges against a Gort egg farmer and former Galway hurling star have been dropped.

Worcester Crown Court in England heard today that the Crown Prosecution had elected not to proceed with the charges against Pearse Piggott of Ballyglennon, Gort over his alleged involvement in a scam which saw tens of millions of eggs falsely passed off as free-range.

British company boss 44 year old Keith Owens of Warbage Lane, Dodford, Worcestershire was jailed for three years after admitting making a fortune by fraudulently passing off battery hen eggs as free range or organic in the UK between 2004 and 2006.
