MAYOR BACKS NEW DEAL FOR CITY CHRISTMAS MARKET

September 2, 2010 - 7:15am

Mayor of Galway, Michael Crowe has confirmed that he is now fully in support of a Christmas Market for the city.

It had been proposed to invite a hundred market stalls into Eyre Square from November until December 19th.

Mayor Crowe had expressed reservations about the original proposal for a Christmas Market in the city saying it would take away from other business in the city.

He described as "madness" a plan to entice businesses to come from outside the city without having to pay any charge or rate.

A renegotiated deal for the Christmas Market has now been reached, whereby the operator, Marketplace Europe will pay the Council 70 thousand euro over three years.
