‘President’ Martin Sheen is the latest celebrity to pledge his support for presidential hopeful, Michael D Higgins.
The Hollywood star, best known for his role in TV hit, The West Wing, as President Jed Bartlett, got to know Mr Higgins when he lived and studied in Galway a few years ago.
Sheen graduated as a mature student in English Literature, Philosophy and Oceanography from NUI Galway and he based himself in Barna for the year.
This week the actor publicly announced his support for Michael D Higgins for the Irish presidency. Though Sheen has dual citizenship and holds an Irish passport because of his Irish roots, it is highly unlikely that he would have registered as a voter to actually vote for his candidate of choice.
Such is Sheen’s popularity on both sides of the Atlantic that his own name was mentioned as a presidential candidate in both the US and in Ireland.
In Ireland, up to 5,000 followers on Facebook urged him to run but, though he said he was flattered by the suggestion, he confirmed he wouldn’t be entering the race for the Arás.
He did, however, pledge his support for Michael D. "I am deeply moved and extremely flattered for the extraordinary interest in my proposed candidacy. And, while I might be tempted to fantasize about being President of Ireland, I am totally unqualified for such a responsibility. Frankly, the bar has been set by two of extraordinary Irish patriots in Mary Robinson and Mary MacAleese. And I could not hope to better the quality of their service.
“However, one candidate that I most heartily support – my dear friend Michael D Higgins. A vote for Michael is a real vote for Ireland.”
