The Brothers of Charity organisation in Galway has reiterated its apology to the victims who suffered physical and sex abuse at its services over a 33 year period.

Following the publication of a report into allegations of abuse at the order’s Holy Family School in Renmore and its associated residential unit at nearby Woodlands, Patrick McGinley, Chief Executive of the BOC in Galway, has stressed that there was a transformed culture within the same services now.

MrMcGinley said that all of the 750 staff at the Galway services had since received mandatory client protection training that would help personnel recognise signs and symptoms of abuse.

There are currently up to 1,000 adults and children in their care.

Fiona Coffey, Head of Evaluation and Training for the Brothers of Charity in Galway said that all the staff now were professional, lay people who were trained in being vigilant to ensure that everyone using the services was in a safer environment.
