Call for Quirke Rd safety review as woman (19) killed in Galway crash
January 31, 2012 - 8:30amBY FRANK FARRAGHER
THE funeral of the 19-year-old woman who lost her life in a single vehicle accident on the Seamus Quirke Road over the weekend, takes place this morning in Craughwell.
Mary Davey from Coldwood, Craughwell, died instantly when the car she was driving went out of control near the Westside Shopping Centre at 3.30am on Saturday morning last.
Two passengers in the Ford Fiesta car – a 21-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman – were taken by ambulance to University Hospital Galway (UHG), shortly after the accident.
It is understood that the car was being driven towards the city when it was in collision with a wall – the male passenger is still being treated at UHG for back injuries, while the female passenger has since been released.
Gardaí and the emergency services were on the scene shortly after the accident occurred – the car had over-turned following the impact.
A local councillor called for the publication of a safety report on the Seamus Quirke Road, currently in the process of undergoing a major revamp.
Cllr Padraig Conneely said that he wasn’t satisfied that certain road management issues were being adequately addressed by the City Council.
“I am calling for a total review of safety issues on the Seamus Quirke Road – in my opinion, serious concerns raised by the businesses and residents of the area, have not been addressed,” said Cllr Conneely.
