July 24, 2012 - 3:11pm

High levels of an algal bloom, responsible for fish kills, have been detected in Galway Bay.

The microscopic algae, karenia mikimotai, occurs naturally in Coastal waters during the Summer.

It is not harmful to humans but has so far caused large numbers of fish deaths particularly in Counties Mayo and Donegal.
