Galway League Cup

Salthill Devon 2
Cregmore 1

SALTHILL Devon under 14 girls captured the Galway League Cup at Terryland Park on Sunday, but they were made to work hard by a competitive Cregmore side. The opening half was even with few chances for either side as both set of defences were on top.

Devon started the second half with an increased tempo, taking the game to Cregmore and the vital breakthrough came after 15 minutes with a ‘poacher’s’ goal from Aideen Naughton.

Cregmore failed to clear an attack and with the ball bobbling about in a maze of legs, Aideen Naughton popped up on the edge of the six yard box, and provided the vital touch to out her side ahead.

The same player doubled their lead seven minutes later when she arrived unmarked in the penalty area and banged home Sadhbh Doyle’s cross. Sorcha Ni Bhraonain and Lilly Hengerer had combined well to set up Doyle’s final pass as Salthill started to show some class.

Cregmore refused to lie down, however, and their ‘never say die’ attitude was rewarded with a goal from a wonderful glancing shot from Megan Shaughnessy with five minutes remaining.

Salthill Devon were, however, the stronger side and they easily contained Cregmore for the remaining few minutes to capture the club’s fifth cup of the season.
