EYRE SQUARE HANDOVER SET FOR COMMEMORATION IN SEPTEMBER
August 4, 2012 - 10:29amThe 300th anniversary of the handing over of Eyre Square to the people of Galway is now likely to be commemorated in September.
The historic handover from Edward Eyre in May 1712 had been scheduled to be marked last May but was postponed due to other pre-scheduled city events.
The matter was discussed at last month's Recreation and Amenity Committee meeting and a provisional date of September 21st was agreed.
The format of the 2 to 3 day celebration has yet to be decided with the Eyre Square Traders Association and the local business community expected to take a lead role in the organisation.
A spokesperson for Galway City Council says there is no funding allocation in the 2012 budget for the event.
