GALWAY MINISTER PLAYS ROLE IN DAILY TELEGRAPH APOLOGY
August 8, 2012 - 5:57pmGalway minister Ciaran Cannon may have played a role in securing an apology from English newspaper the Daily Telegraph for calling Katie Taylor 'British'
The major gaffe by the newspaper was in a preview of today's semi final match and was trending on Twitter all day
Junior Minister and Galway East TD Ciaran Cannon tweeted 'it was inevitable that some of the British media would become somewhat geographically confused'
Ciaran Cannon, who's from Carrabane, was one a select group of ministers, to meet Queen Elizabeth during her first visit to Ireland last year
He greeted the monarch as she visited Trinity College
A short time after Minister Cannon's tweet and 90 minutes after Katie Taylor won the semi final to secure a silver and possibly a gold medal the Telegraph issued an apology
The newspaper said 'we're sorry for mistakenly describing the fantastic boxer Katie Taylor as British in our London 2012 section today... she is Irish of course'
