Pressure off Mervue Utd ahead of weekend's ties
September 28, 2012 - 7:00amKeith Kelly
Having all but secured a seventh place finish as a result of last weekend’s results, the pressure is off Mervue United tonight when they host Wexford Youths in Fahy’s Field (7.45pm).
Johnny Glynn’s side defeated Athlone Town 3-0 last weekend, and that victory – coupled with an admittedly unlucky defeat for SD Galway at the hands of league leaders Limerick FC – leaves Mervue United five points clear of their city rivals at the foot of the table with just three games remaining.
SD Galway can still overtake them, of course, especially given the fact the two sides meet in Fahy’s Field on the last weekend of the season. However, they will need to defeat either Longford Town this weekend, or Finn Harps next weekend, defeat Mervue in that final game, and hope Glynn’s side are beaten by both Wexford and Waterford to see them avoiding the wooden spoon.
That seems a tall order, especially as the Drom outfit have won just three games all season, but you can be sure that Tony Mannion will be drilling the message in to his players that there is still plenty to play for this season, starting with their game away to Longford Town tomorrow night (7.45pm).
Meanwhile, in the Airtricity U-19 League, Salthill Devon host Drogheda United in Drom this Sunday (1.30pm) in the Elite Division; while in the Southern Section of the First Division, Galway United Supporters’ Trust FC are home to Limerick FC in Eamonn Deacy Park tomorrow (7pm), while Mervue United are away to Athlone Town on Sunday (11am).
