Student seriously injured as car prank goes wrong
October 26, 2012 - 7:15amBY FRANK FARRAGHER
A young student is in a serious condition in Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital following a road incident in the city centre in the early hours of Thursday morning that, according to onlookers, started out as “a bit of messing and high jinks”.
The incident occurred at about 12.30am at Eyre Street close to the taxi-rank area, when the student apparently made his way onto the bonnet of a car.
It is not certain what happened in the following minutes, but the student then fell off the vehicle and suffered serious head injuries.
The emergency services were called to the scene immediately and the student – understood to be from County Clare – was rushed to University Hospital Galway, before being transferred to Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital some hours later.
The injured man is understood to be in his early 20s, while the driver of the car involved is also understood to be in that age group. The driver is understood to have fully co-operated with the Gardaí, who have also spoken to a number of other witnesses.
A Garda spokesperson, who declined to comment on the specific details of the incident, confirmed that a number of witnesses had come forward, but they were still appealing for others to contact them.
“This was a serious incident in which a young man was injured and we are appealing for any other witnesses to contact us as a matter of urgency.
