Businessman rescues 60 jobs at new fashion store

AROUND 60 jobs are to be saved at a new city fashion retailer that has been trading for less than four months, after a local developer stepped in with a ‘white knight’ takeover bid.

The Born Store in Newtownsmyth – which opened its doors at the beginning of May – was bought for a nominal fee (usually €1 or €2) by developer John Curley, who already owns the building.

All jobs are believed to be safe, and there will be no changes to the running of the store, although new labels will be stocked.

Mr Curley and his new business partner – a fashion buyer in Dublin – will also take over the debts of the company.

The company had been run by Gina and Rishi Malde, but ran into cash-flow difficulties shortly after opening, despite trading successfully.

Their other two companies, which operated Club Denim stores in Dublin, were placed in liquidation at the end of June and at the end of July.
