No, the Government should not be asked to cough up again. Huge amounts of money went into this event. Where did it all go? On what was it all spent? Let's have a look at that before we go asking anyone for more money.

Of course the government should try and get the volvo race back to Galway and Ireland, it brought the county together
Why don' t we the People of Galway put pressure on the Government to get the volvo back to Galway its not as if they have done anything for us

The Government should not underwrite this event. The Businesses who make large profits from the event should fund it. Also no offical figures have been published by previous organises as to the breakdown of cost associated with staging this event.
Why don't all the hotels,
Why don't all the hotels, pubs, restaurants and nightclubs collect the money between them as they are the ones who make it during the volvo ocean race

Let's be clear: The government has no money - it never had - all government funding comes from the taxpayer. The Volvo Ocean Race must pay for itself.

Had the government spent €20m on the last volvo, it would have made that money and more on VAT alone, given of course, that initial figures suggest that 100m was the spend. By not investing, they are turning thier back on profits they could plough back into government debt. As one poster suggested, why dont the hotels invest... in actual fact, last time out they did, and heavily, but I for one wouldnt be in favour of private enterprise taking what should be government profits next time our
